Not Back to School Blog Hop

The summer has just flown by and it is hard to believe that next Monday it is time to start school once again.  This year the beginning is going to be a bit different than others.  My kiddos will start on their own.  They are pretty self motivated.  The youngest still needs a little help but can do it for short terms.  We talked about delaying for another week or so but then there isn’t time for other emergencies later on.  I can’t say any of us are really excited it is more just gotta do what you gotta do.

Their binders have all the print outs that they will need for the first 9 weeks.  I’ve also included schedules for that period of time for science, fine arts and the civics course.  Everything else is printed out weekly from Homeschool Tracker.  I’ve printed out the first 2 weeks of assignments and will go from there when I return home.  We are not 100% sure what my recovery will look like but we are hoping for no driving for 2 weeks and lifting restrictions from 6-8 weeks.  If indeed that is the way it goes, the kids will also participate in coop classes on Thursdays just after Labor Day.   To this point, they have participated in enrichment/elective classes from Eagle Co-op here in Reno.  I had hoped to teach this fall but life had other plans.

Here is the plan:

Bekah – 11th Grade

TOG does provide a government elective.  We are choosing to use the NCCS course because it will provide her with the credit she needs for a civics course in one year.  The TOG option assumes that you are using it for all four years and gives 1/4 credit for each of those years.  We have not.  Bekah is considering taking college courses next year and wants to be able to do that without a heavy load at home.

Virginia – 8th Grade

  • Tapestry of Grace – Year 4: 1900’s to the present day.   This covers history, literature, geography, fine arts, and writing at the Dialectic level.
  • Exploring Creation with Zoology 2 – Swimming Creatures
  • Teaching Textbooks Algebra 1 and Your Business Math Series Book Store – Charlotte Mason
  • Fables, Myths and Fairy Tales by Institute for Excellence in Writing
  • Fix It Grammar – IEW
  • Writing Aids
  • Artist and Composer Study – Lesson Plans by Harmony Art Mom that goes along with our TOG.
  • Devotionals – Lives of the Prophets and Doctrine & Covenants

Samuel – 4th Grade

  • Tapestry of Grace – Year 4: 1900’s to the present day.   This covers history, literature, geography, fine arts, and writing transitioning from LG to UG level.
  • Exploring Creation with Zoology 1 – Flying Creatures
  • Teaching Textbooks Math 4
  • Fables, Myths and Fairy Tales by Institute for Excellence in Writing
  • Writing Aids
  • Artist and Composer Study – Lesson Plans by Harmony Art Mom that goes along with our TOG.
  • Phonetic Zoo – Spelling A
  • Devotionals – Boys Who Became Prophets and Doctrine and Covenants

I am looking forward to better health and having the energy to do some of the things that this last year seemed impossible.

Hi Darla,

I was thinking about you and remember you keep a blog. I’m excited to see your home projects and the new spa. How is your health? Sounds like you had some surgery. I hope you are doing better now.

We are currently in San Diego and will be returning to Doha next Monday. School is starting a little later than usual because they decided to keep the kids out completely for Ramadan.

Best regards to you and your family!

Polly, Thank you for asking the surgery went well and I’m very glad that it is over. The tests came back negative for cancer. They figured out the problem and dealt with it as much as possible during the surgery and the rest is up to hormone therapy. I’m recovering quite well.

Enjoy your visit to San Diego and tell everyone we say hello. 🙂
