Tie Dying Activity

For history we were learning about India.  One of the suggested activities was to dye t-shirts.  As I searched for ideas on how to do this I came across this post from a fellow blogger.  http://schoolathome.blogspot.com/2004/09/tie-dye.html

Each person coming to our activity was to bring a t-shirt or item to dye.

Here are the pictures of our efforts.

Planning our activity.
Supplies needed:

Buckets or shoe box sized containers for keeping your dye.

Plastic lids from storage container

String

Rubberbands

Dye – we chose primary colors and then mixed our own secondary colors.

Plastic gloves

Kids wear old clothes

Acetone – to remove dye from hands.

Organizing:

1.  Watch videos for tying techniques or print out instructions.  Both were helpful

2.  Tied our shirts

3.  Went outside to complete our activity

4.  Buckets with prepared dye waiting along with lids for their projects when finished with the dye.

5.  From our activity we learned the longer in the dye the better.  10mins minimum for darker colors.

6.  After the items rested for 10mins after dying, we rinsed them with an outdoor hose and let them dry on the grass.

7.  Take home directions:

Use an iron on your dried item before washing.  (This sets the color)

Then handwash separately the first couple times so the dye doesn’t stain your washing machine. 🙂
